Drawing with David Kassan in Brooklyn

I seem to know a lot of figurative painters who work in a variety of realist techniques. I'm going to start putting some of them up on my Blog, for a variety of reasons. One, because I like them and I want them to get a wider exposure; two, because I've learned a lot from them and if you are an artist reading this, you might, too; three, if you are interested in buying art, go take a look at their sites as well as my own site; and four, because maybe now I can get them to buy me coffee or dinner.

I was in Brooklyn on a portrait commission this summer and visited the very talented David Kassan in his studio. We drew a model together and had a great time (well, I did, anyway). I'm going to see David again in 2008 when he comes to teach at Scottsdale Artists' School. He's teaching a class on the portrait head, March 17th - 21st, 2008 - go click on the Scottsdale Artists' School link to find out more about it. David is a wonderfully articulate teacher and I'm really looking forward to the class.

Hi Linda,

I for one am very glad you've put up those links, there's some really stunning work there. Blogs are more about conversations than business anyway, and linking between sites is a good and healthy thing I think.

I confess I'm deeply embarassed to be included in the list given the company I'm in there, but I suppose I'll just have to live with it :)

Paul, don't be embarrassed to be listed on the right, some of them are not so bad. :)
Thanks for posting something here. It was great to go through the BP show with you in London this summer and hear your take on it.

I enjoyed it very much too. Going round a show with a fellow painter was a new experience for me, and a lot of fun.

I'm still surprised that they didn't chuck me out for adding that Sargent drawing to the exhibition. If only we'd had some sticky tape, we could have done a proper job of it.

There's a telling comment on one of the paintings, left by a visitor to the NPG site; "So lifelike I thought it was a photograph!" Erm...

There was some lovey work too though. "Portrait of Christopher Darroux-Xavier" is still etched into my memory.

Be sure to let me know the next time you're in my neck of the woods.

Linda, this is a great idea and I'm so glad to be included in your list. I might borrow your idea on my website, if that's okay with you, and help to spread the word about so many terrific artists.

Wow! Thank you! I always wanted to write in my site something like that. Can I take part of your post to my blog?

Linda Tracey Brandon said...

Sure, Anonymous, but which part? You're not David, are you?

If you are, where's my caw-fee*?

("Coffee" in Brooklyneese.)
